The Mental Health Research Institute (MHRI) located at Parkville in Melbourne is Australia’s premiere psychiatric research centre and is working to understand, detect, treat, and prevent mental illnesses. The Institute is fully accredited as a medical research institute by the National Health and Medical Research Council and is formally affiliated with the University of Melbourne, Monash University and Melbourne Health.

Our primary focus is on serious mental illnesses including:

 

Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative illnesses; Psychotic illness (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder); Major depression and related issues including substance abuse and suicide.

Research conducted at the Institute is linked to clinical care, ensuring that knowledge gained through research is translated into improved treatments and service delivery.
